Writing About Literature: Theme Development
Learning Target: I can determine the meaning of a story by examining the author's use of characterization.
We will be write a short essay about the short story "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife"written by Ernest Hemingway using characterization to show how a theme is developed.
1) This story appeared right after "Indian Camp" in a collection of short stories called In Our Time.
2) We will read the story -- you will take notes as you turn and talk. What do you notice about the way the characters are portrayed (characterization)? You may notice a pattern from Indian Camp.
3) Write a 4 paragraph "essay" -- thesis, two body paragraphs supporting the thesis, conclusion.
