Writing About Literature

Learning Target:  I can determine the meaning of a story by examining the author's use of characterization.

We will be write a short essay about the short story "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife" written by Ernest Hemingway using characterization to show how a theme is developed.

1) This story appeared right after "Indian Camp" in a collection of short stories called In Our Time.

2) Read the story -- take notes. What do you notice about the way the characters are portrayed (characterization).  You may notice a pattern from Indian Camp.

3) Write a 4 paragraph "essay" -- thesis, two body paragraphs supporting the thesis, conclusion.
