New Seating Chart

New Seating Chart Activity: Interview everyone at your new table and determine who had the best snow day and the worst snow day?  Two different people must present the best and worst but you cannot present your own.  It must include specific details about why it was so bad or good.

Circle: If you were getting ready to room with a new roommate, what would you tell them ahead of time so they would know your faults?

Presentations: Your career presentation and your reading log presentation.  We will be giving you practice time so you can score each other with the rubric before you present to Toohey and Truman.

Vocabulary Practice
This year, we will be learning the 100 words that every high school graduate should know.
Click here to access the list. You will be choosing two words at your table and then rock paper scissors against the other tables(coaching is permitted) to see which table gets to nominate their words.  Champion chooses.

Unit: Understanding how Theme's a developed in Literature/Film
Learning Target: I can explain how an author uses symbol, setting and (especially) characterization to develop a theme.
Today we will be practicing writing an essay explaining how the them of the film was developed by using symbols, setting and characterization. Today, we will watch "La Luna" and practice.
Everything on the board goes on your practice paper.
1) On the board, I will write "what is the big life problem the character has to solve?", "How does he solve it?", "What is the theme of the story?"
2) On your practice paper, write "In order to develop the theme ________ the film uses characterization."
3) On the board I will write a grid containing three columns and two rows.  The columns are the parts of the film, the rows are "claim" and "evidence."
4) Watch the film.
5) Answer the questions at your table.
6) Cold call and check for understanding.
7) Construct a quick essay.  In your introduction, practice the technique "Inquire and Explore" with the central question the character is trying to answer.

Unit: Economics
Learning Target: I can analyze the movement of stocks and find a news story to explain why a company's stock increased or decreased in value.
1) Visit Google Finance
2) Learn how to create simple stock comparison charts using the compare tool.
3) Load a 1-year chart of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
4) At your table, brainstorm & discover companies that have diverged from what the market is doing.
5) Use google news and filtering for the days that a market sharply diverged, find news stories the explain why the stock gained or lost value.
5) Cold call share out of findings.
