If you had the chance to either stay at this school or go to a school where all decisions were made by a group of 50 elected students, what would you do?
Finish Yearbook Activity
Complete the Elements of Deep Culture sheet defining one rule for each element based a specific piece of evidence in the yearbook (30 minutes). After completion, we'll be doing cold call presentations in which you will present one cultural rule with evidence explaining how you figured out that rule.
Assessment: Percent completion of sheet; In-class presentation grade
Introduction to Ancient Athens/Greece
Athens is considered the birthplace of democracy. We'll be looking at our own Declaration of Independence to understand the Athenian values and beliefs that are contained in our own democracy.
To do this we'll do a close reading of the text:
- Groups of 3
- Take turns reading each sentence. If someone has trouble reading a word have them "run a finger through it." If the student can not read the word, help.
- After reading the sentence, figure out what the sentence means. Start by determining the definition of unknown words (place them on the right of the bi-fold)
- Use 6" voice
- Think about this while reading: "Why do governments exits?"
