Circle Prep: Why are we watching Restrepo? Why are we reading Montana, 1948?

Introduce: Globalization vs. Nationalism

Reading: Montanan, 1948

Unit: Globalism -- "Retrepo"
Learning TargetI can explain what is like to be deployed in a combat zone. I can explain how globalization leads to the need for military intervention.
We will be watching the film Restrepo -- a documentary about soldiers' experiences in Afghanistan in 2009. After watching this, you will understand the personal cost to globalism.
     1) Watch the segment -- put yourself in their shoes.
     2) Look for evidence that will help you explain what it is like to live in a combat zone.
     4) Repeat for the next segment.

Unit: Economics -- Globalization Writing
What would you care about if you were there?
Who would you be fighting for?
Given the poverty of Afghanistan, do you feel any obligation to help them?
Are you a globalist or a nationalist?

Finish Plato's Allegory of the Cave--Puppet Show in the Middle
First, we will read this text after looking up Socrates.
1) We will read a section of the text and model the kind of discussion you will have at your table.
2) Take notes on the provided document.
3) We will read more text.
4) You will have private conversations at your table.
5) Volunteers to explain.
6) Write translations in the box.
7) Repeat until done.
