Circle: If you had to teach something what would you teach?

Activity:  Labeling a paragraph as a team!  We want you to get excellent at breaking down writing into its parts. Using what we now know about each other from Myers's Briggs,  we will be breaking down another paragraph from "Indian Camp" into its parts using the TRIAC method.

Reading Literature

Learning Target:  I can read a story and determine how setting, characterization, and symbols are used to help develop a theme.

We will finish discussing the shorty story "The Flowers" by Alice Walker and examining her use of characterization, setting and symbols to determine the meaning or theme of the story.

1) We will read "The Flowers" aloud page-by-page, discerning and sharing insights as we go.

2) Ultimately, we are trying to determine a theme of the story through her use of characterization, setting, symbols.

Writing about Literature

Learning Target: I can read a story and write a claim evidence warrant paragraph about the author's purpose.
Use your notes and your knowledge of the text to write a claim, evidence, warrant paragraph about the authors purpose.  Use the stem "The author believes that..." or a starter of your own choice.

Now we will look at ways that we can write about this story (with links to web sites that will help with each style):

1) Express & reflect

2) Inform & explain (can't use this one!)

3) Evaluate & judge

4) Inquire & explore

5) Analyze & interpret

6) Take a stand & propose solution

We will put these on the board and use turn and talk to identify how you could write about "The Flowers" using these on of these methods.

Stock Market Game: 

I can explain how to invest money in the stock market and how the stock market works.

You will be learning about the stock market this year by actually participating in a virtual stock market.  You will be given $100,000 dollars to purchase stocks with.  First, watch this video. Your task is to do some research into:
1. What is the stock market?
2. How does it work?
3. What is a stock?
4. Why is it important?

5. How do you make money?
6. How do you lose money?
7. What are some tried and true strategies for making money in the market?
8. What are some important events in the history of the stock market?
9. Report out.
