The iPhone, Economy and Culture
We'll be watching a couple of videos and reading an article to understand the relationship between economy and something called culture. For culture, we'll be using the definition "the unwritten rules in a group about what's important & not important, what's OK & not OK, what's cool & not cool.
Objectives: After this class, you will be able to explain the role culture plays in supporting an economy.
To begin we'll watch this video to understand how the iPhone is related to the global economy. After the video you'll be expected to 1) explain the concept of a job multiplier, 2) explain why jobs are moving to China, 3) how does that impact the United States.
Next, we'll be looking at a Daily Show video about Foxconn, and an article the company that assembles much of the components for Apple. After the video, you'll be expected explain the problems that the global economy brings.
Next, we'll read this article titled "How the U.S. Lost Out on iPhone Work."
After the article, we'll be introducing the concept of culture through the handout Elements of Deep Culture and you will be explaining the key differences in Chinese culture within some key categories of culture.
