Day in a Nutshell
We'll be spending the day preparing for and writing an essay on The Things They Carried. You'll need your computer, a pencil, note paper and your brain.

Learning Target:
By the end of class, you will be able to start all your body paragraphs with clear claim and use evidence from the text to support your claim.

The Things we Finish
1) Mr. Burns will share the identified topics from The Things They Carried. Write these at the top of your notes. (5 minutes)
2) Silently, determine a story you would like to write about and what you think you might be able to prove (5 minutes)
3) At your table, share. (2 minutes)
4) Reconsider -- are there more stories that you might need to look at to prove your point? (2 minutes)
5) Two Standing Circles (take notes as you listen): What story have you chosen and what are you hoping to prove? (until finished)
6) Back to your table -- skim, read, notes on the stories/story you are considering. (5 Minutes)
7) Input into the quote database your thesis and two quotations (5 minutes)
7a) See the results
8) Back to your table -- plan your essay: define what each paragraph is going to do (25 Minutes)
9) Visit google classroom to write your paper (to end of class)

Paper Requirements
-Name, date in upper right
-Interesting title
-Double spaced

-Interesting Introduction
-Thesis at end of introduction

-At least three body paragraphs
-with clear claims
-quoted evidence from the book
-a clear warrant that explains how the quote proves the claim to be true
