Question: Does it matter where you live if you want to get everything you want and need? How difficult is it to change your environment?

Short Documentary:  Machines in the Garden Video

We'll be taking notes focussing on information that will help us answer the question: "Does where we live shape who we become?"

Big Essay:
In Google Classroom
Today we will start and finish an essay in which you defend your decision about where to live and give your family the best future: Rumford or Cape Elizabeth.  You will be assessed on your ability to successfully use multiple sources to defend your position and explain the opposing viewpoint.

How to write a paragraph

Requirements -- You must integrate information from the following sources:
Beans of Egypt, Maine
Roger and Me
Ernie's Ark
Mock Economy
The Rivals
"Here Comes the Neighborhood"
Census Data on Cape Elizabeth & Rumford
Machines in the Garden Video
My Home Town lyrics -- good for introduction or conclusion
Small Town lyrics -- good for introduction or conclusion

Helpful Information
-Your essay will be made of several paragraphs
-Each paragraph will make one of 4 points: Why you would live in Rumford? Why would you not live in Rumford? Why would you live in Cape? Why would you not live in Rumford?

a) How does capitalism plays in distribute wealth?
b) How does environment/culture encourage or inhibit aspirations?
c) Explain what capitalism and socialism are and give examples of both in the Oxford Hills.
d) Explain the possible roles of government in improving and supporting a capitalist economy.
e) Explain what"Surplus value of labor" is and the role it play in capitalism.
f)  Explain are the benefits of capitalism?
g) What are the weaknesses of capitalism?
