Friday January 8, 2016

At the beginning of class:
-Get your notes and folders ready
-Be ready to answer this question: What are we doing and why are we doing it?

Circle: What's your lost passion?
Unit: Writing about literature
Unit Learning Target: After completing this unit, you will be able to determine how an author develops a theme in  a literary text.
Today, we will focus on one tool that authors use to develop theme: setting.
Definition:
Setting is the context in which all of the actions take place. What is the time period, the location, the time of day, the season, the weather, the type of room or building?  What is the general mood, and who is present?  All of these elements can reflect on the story's events, and though the setting of a story tends to be less conspicuous than plot and character, setting still colors everything that's said and done within its context.
1) Read for 30 minutes examining the text for setting. Use the handout (note and notice) to figure out things about the setting.
2) When completed, take notes on your findings.
3) Share at your table
4) Cold call findings

Unit: Should we go to war with ISIS? [Parts of this unit will be put into the daily agenda]
Unit Learning Target: By the end of the unit, you will be to able use various print and media sources to form an opinion on a complex issue in order to make a reasoned decision.
Today, you will be grouped with people who have made the same decision as you.
Challenge: Develop a presentation that explains the situation with ISIS and makes a recommendation for a course of action.  See this document for requirements:
