Unit: Writing about literature
Unit Learning Target: After completing this unit, you will be able to determine how an author develops a theme in a literary text.
Today, we will focus on one tool that authors use to develop theme: Character
Definition:
Character is everything about a character -- looks, personality, thoughts, dreams, etc.
1) Read for 30 minutes examining the text for setting. Use the handout (note and notice) to figure out things about the setting.
2) When completed, take notes on your findings, answering some of these questions:
-Did you explain how what other characters think about him impact or affect him?
-Do you have evidence to show personality traits - talkative, shy,honesty, innocence,
-Have I explained what is revealed by what a character says
-Appearance and what it reveals
-How does their response to adversity reveal who they are
-How does what others say about them reveal the character
-How does the main character’s choices advance the theme.
-How do the needs and wants of the character drive the plot of the story
-Did you explain what their personal living space looks like?
-Did you explain what the main character says about the other characters in the book? Did you explain why that is important.

Unit Learning Target: By the end of the unit, you will be to able use various print and media sources to form an opinion on a complex issue in order to make a reasoned decision.
Today, you will be grouped with people who have made the same decision as you.
Challenge: Develop a presentation that explains the situation with ISIS and makes a recommendation for a course of action.
Today: Brainstorm the elements of a good presentation; then develop a list of what this presentations needs; then work on your warrants.
