Unit: Writing about literature
Unit Learning Target: After completing this unit, you will be able to determine how an author develops a theme in a literary text.
Today, we will focus on one tool that authors use to develop theme: Dialogue
Definition:
Dialogue is what characters say to each other. What people say is a window into what they believe, what they think, and a lot of other things about their personality. When looking at dialogue, you have to determine if you believe what characters say and what their motivation is for saying it.
1) Read for 30 minutes examining the text for dialogue.
2) When completed, write down an example of dialogue from the text. Then explain what the dialogue says about the character. Try to determine the motivation of the character is saying what they say.
