Unit: Writing about literature
Unit Learning Target: After completing this unit, you will be able to determine how an author develops a theme in a literary text.
Today, we will focus on one tool that authors use to develop theme: Dialogue
Definition:
Dialogue is what characters say to each other. What people say is a window into what they believe, what they think, and a lot of other things about their personality. When looking at dialogue, you have to determine if you believe what characters say and what their motivation is for saying it.
1) Read for 30 minutes examining the text for dialogue.
2) When completed, write down an example of dialogue from the text. Then explain what the dialogue says about the character. Try to determine the motivation of the character is saying what they say.

New Unit! Economics Unit Objective
To understand how globalization affects nearly every aspect of our lives and why global politics and economics are so important.
There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys, how’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What the hell is water?”…
The immediate point of the fish story is that the most obvious, ubiquitous, important realities are often the ones that are the hardest to see and talk about. In your group come up with a way to explain water to a fish. What is the connection to economics?
