Circle: Who is a bigger influence on you right now: parents or friends?
Vocab: Metaphor, Culture, Socioeconomic status, Stereotype, Social Mobility
Reading: Make sure to have your book ready and renewed.
Scenario: You have the opportunity to raise your child in either Cape Elizabeth or Rumford. Your family will earn $140,000. One parent is a chemical engineer and the other a nurse. This amount of yearly income would allow you to buy a house in either town up to but not over 350,000. That will mean very different things in each community -- you will have extra income if you live in Rumford, while in Cape Elizabeth most of your money will be spent on house payments. Your child will have very different experiences in each.
1) Your child. Make and determine the values you want your child to have in order for them to have a happy, successful life. Write three on the back.
2) Quick research on each town. Cape Elizabeth High School Mountain Valley High School
Research on each school: Maine ESSA dashboard
3) Turn and talk -- what did you find?
4) Make your choice: Cold call. Your pick and why.
5) Place your child.
Writing: Develop a CEW paragraph in which you
- name what values you want your child to have
- describe what you would need to instill those values
- and explain why those values will help create a happy, successful life for your child.
Short Story: "The House Behind" by Lydia Davis
Before: Write about a "bad" neighbor that you once had. (Or, what are the qualities of a "good" neighbor?).
During: Read "The House Behind" aloud. Stop each page or so. Collect sentences and phrases about how people in each house are described.
After: What do the sentences and phrases tell us about the different houses? What is the metaphor we are supposed to come away with?
