Vocab: Stratification, Cultural Capital, Prejudice, Norm, Irony

Reading: Come to class with your very own book. Try to bring one that you actually enjoy.

Circle: What is an element of Deep Culture that you find especially important or weird?

Writing: Write about the deep culture of both Rumford and Cape Elizabeth.  This will become part of the exposition of the final essay.

For the Exposition:

Task: Write a paragraph that explains some of the elements of deep culture that we see in Rumford and Cape Elizabeth.  For any you write about, compare or contrast it to the other community.

Exemplar:

There are several observable traits of both Rumford and Cape Elizabeth that help distinguish the two communities.  One element is the concept of grooming and personal presence.  When we see both parents and students of Cape Elizabeth, we see parents who are neatly dressed, typically in button down shirts and khakis for men and blouses for women.  The dress for both students and parents in Rumford, meanwhile, consist mostly of t-shirts and often well-worn ones.  Grooming in Cape Elizabeth, meanwhile, consists of women with styled and hairsprayed dos while the men have short haircuts and are clean shaven.  The men and boys of Rumford, meanwhile, have shaggier haircuts; the men have full grown beards and the boys tend to have patchy, but long beard growth.  The ethics of the two communities also seem contrasted.  The Cape Elizabeth players are not above insulting the community of Rumford and one player misses the first practice while he’s on vacation.  In Rumford, however, players seem respectful and venerate other teams.  Practice, too, seems to be something of a holy rite.

Before: Jot some notes.  What is a quote from Aaron Filieo from Friday's video that seems contrary--or ironic--from what we expected of him based on earlier parts of the film?

During: Watch Part 4 the Rivals, take LOTS of notes.  Share out at stopping points.

Cape Cheating Story...

After: What is the most important quote from Part 4?  What does it reveal about one of the towns?  (write in your Values Paragraph doc).
