Introduction: Toohey and Burns know that most of you will never be historians or even history teachers. That is not the point of studying history. The point of studying history is to help you grow into thoughtful consumers of information. Each day you are inundated with countless pieces of information that help shape your opinions, decisions and your future. What we want is for you to always be aware of where your information is coming from and make an informed decision about how reliable it is.
Your job is to create a presentation about how good any piece of information is and can you make a good decision based upon it.
Procedure:
1) Pick one of the pieces of evidence of information from the football DBQ.
2) Answer each of these questions:
a) Who produced it? Ask yourself about the gender, age, ethnicity, social status, religion, intellectual beliefs, etc. of the source.b) Who was the intended audience? People speak differently depending on who is listening.c) When was it produced? People speak differently depending on what has just happened.d) Where was this produced? Where you are sometimes determines what you say.e) Why did the author/speaker produce or say this? If you know what a reasons intent is, you can determine whether or not to believe them.
3) For each question, determine what you learn about the reliability of the source from your answer.
4) Explain what the source helped you determine.
5) Each person in the group will answer one of the questions and explain how those answers informed your judgement of the source ind its reliability. One person will also explain the overall judgement you've made about the believability of the information.
